Booktubers are between 18 and 30 years old. Their channels focus on book recommendations and reviews. With this, more young people are getting closer to reading.
As with a “youtuber”, the key to the success of booktubers lies in their personality and their gift for being in front of a camera.
The best-known booktubers are the France Mobile Number List VlogBrothers, two American brothers who not only comment on books, but who can be considered inspirations of the trend. Their channel was born in 2007, it has almost three million subscribers and they also review movies or comment on historical curiosities.
There are hundreds of booktubers in the world, most of them focus on specific genres and audiences. Each video works like a book club in which each week a new work is proposed to read and comment on something.
One of the best-known booktubers is Gustavo Fajardo, a lover of fantasy and fiction stories; Arath Ballesteros, a boy who did not like to read. On the other hand, Antonio Palafox, a teenage romance fan. They were the winners of the IV International Contest for Booktubers in Mexico, organized by the Economic Culture Fund, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Canal Once and the Ministry of Culture.
Gustavo Fajardo, 11 years old, is a lover of reading. He won first place in category A (ages 9 to 11) of the contest, with the book review: The Killer Cat Falls in Love by Anne Fine. For this charismatic booktuber “all stories are cool.”
According to Animal Político, Fajardo found out about this contest when reading his favorite magazine and told his parents that he wanted to participate. “I was interested in talking about The Killer Cat Falls in Love because I thought the title was cool,” he said.
In addition to having a taste for books, Gustavo formed a reading club with his classmates to recommend and talk about other works.
“What I like most about my book club are the followers because I know that the people who follow me are people who like to read,” he explained.
